Taxi tipping at a glance

  • In the US and Canada a 15–20% tip is expected, similar to restaurants.
  • In a few places a 10–15% tip is the courteous standard for good service.
  • Across most of Europe, a small 5–10% tip or simply rounding up is the norm.
  • In much of Scandinavia, Australia and Asia, tips are not expected — rounding up is plenty.
  • In some countries (Japan, China, South Korea) tipping is not customary and may even confuse the driver.
